Black bears once inhabited all forest ecosystems of North America, and although their populations have been fragmented due to habitat destruction, they are still quite successful and their numbers have grown over the past decade. Despite their powerful size, black bears are not usually aggressive to people, and their diet consists of berries, nuts, insects, and fish, although black bears in some regions may attack weak ungulates; as opportunistic omnivores, they'll take what they can get. Their scavenging habits allow them to thrive in proximity to humans, raiding dumpsters, compost heaps, farms, and apiaries for food. This poses a threat to both parties, as bears that become accustomed to associating people with food may become aggressive in their foraging, and once they are seen as a threat, humans may actively kill bears in developed areas.

People can help black bears by advocating for habitat conservation and ensuring that compost heaps and other refuse disposal sites are bear-proofed; this is required by law in many Western municipalities. This shirt depicts a black bear in a beautiful landscape accompanied by a quote from Henry David Thoreau, "I wish to speak a word for nature," reminding us to speak up for nature and do our best to advocate for conservation and the protection of our natural resources.

This Bear Wonder t-shirt is perfect for stylish and casual wear. Whether you're hitting the town or just lounging around, its soft, 100% cotton fabric ensures comfort and long-lasting wear. Featuring a bold and eye-catching black bear print, this t-shirt will keep you looking cool and feeling comfortable.

Gloria Dickie in her book, Eight Bears, chronicles the history and current situation of the eight species of bears.  Along the way she has adventures and talks with bear researchers, bear protectors, biologists, and ranchers who live near bears.

Artwork by Asante Riverwind, a former Sierra Club staffer, whom Jim met at a protest of the sale of lumber from old growth forests.
